mello is a Y Combinator (S21) backed start-up that integrates wellbeing into every employees’ workflow in order to unlock their full potential. We are paving the path for the future of work. Our vision is to help every remote team on the planet to work healthier, more sustainably, and learn how to stay mello instead of burning out.

As second-time founders, we burnt out building our last company during the pandemic. We wanted a simple, easy-to-use solution that integrates right into our workflow to increase our wellbeing but couldn’t find anything on the market so we decided to build the solution we would’ve liked to use ourselves (aka, eating your own dog food).

At mello, we’re building the new standard that remote and hybrid companies use to track, measure, and act on burnouts to inspire happier, healthier, more motivated teams. mello suggests smart actions for both employees, managers as well as HR to take to increase wellbeing, productivity and retention.

About this Role

We here at mello fully understand how lonely, helpless, and under-appreciated a backend engineer might feel and we provide all the resources you ever needed to complete your task. Notwithstanding what our security auditor report said, we allow full access to StackOverflow, Google search, and related resources so you can get all the help you ever needed; how you cut, paste, and run (or deploy) is all up to you – assuming you know how to navigate the vast knowledge of the Net, and how to use a browser/editor. You must also be able to legally work in Canada.

    We provide the best, and we expect the best, such as:

    • API first design, knows all the verbs, and knows when to or not to, return 404
    • Well versed in API authentication and authorization
    • Knows what and where to look when your API/database is sick (or dead), before everyone else
    • Knows your way around the AWS console, but can also provide resources with an editor
    • Knows how to gather all the logs from everywhere, for whatever reasons required at the time, and present it in such a way that even your hiring manager can understand (this is a low bar to clear)
    • You will contribute and define our engineering values, process, and deployment cadence, with scalability and security in mind.

    Technical Skills you have:

    • IAM, OAuth Integration (i.e. AWS Cognito, Okta)
    • API development (Swagger first approach) and Monitoring
    • Cloud computing and application development
    • CI/CD pipeline i.e. CircleCI, Github Actions

    What you’ll be doing

    • Develop solid API backend and infrastructure with NodeJS and common frameworks like ExpressJS
    • Develop CI/CD pipeline for cloud deployment e.g. Github action or Travis
    • Follow industry best practices in data protection and PII safeguarding
    • Develop dashboards for data visualization and analytics
    • Scale our applications/databases to over one million users across North America
    • Develop and maintain monitoring systems to alert and notify system failures
    • 20% Front-end development, and 80% backend development
    • Strong database fundamentals on SQL and NoSQL databases
    • Plan, design, test, deliver and support new and existing features and functionality in the products that adapt to the changing requirements and expectations in the front-end and back-end, and infrastructure.
    • Turning product plans into code, involving close collaboration with product managers, UX designers, UX researchers, and other developers.
    • Ensure code quality and maintainability by tackling tech debt, conducting code reviews and improving build and test systems.
    • Contribute to the team's work with high-quality, well-tested, and scalable code.
    • Documenting and sharing knowledge with other team members.
    • QA, debug, and all that other fun stuff!

    Education:

    • Bachelor's in Computer Science (Preferred)

    Experience:

    • Backend Development: 3 years (Required)
    • DevOps: 1 year (Preferred)
